Lesbians and Gay Men Over 60. Where are they? Part 2

Homosexuality may be defined as “the condition of being sexually attracted to persons of the same sex” or “sexual relations between those of the same sex”. Within the gay communication, however, the term homosexual carries negative connotations. When they use “homosexual”, they refer to persons who have not fully accepted their sexual orientation. “Gay”, on the other hand, means someone who accepts him/herself as gay or lesbian. The term homosexual puts too much emphasis on ‘sex’ and omits other valuable aspects of relationships. However, the older male and female gay communities still resist the word ‘gay’, using homosexual, or worse, queer, puff, dyke. There are historical reasons for less self-acceptance among older gays/lesbians. They come from an era when they were expected to hide their sexual orientation for a variety of reasons, such as discrimination in jobs or housing, legal concerns and many more.

Being uncomfortable with talking about or dealing with gay issues naturally brings us to consider homophobia, the irrational fear of love and affection between members of the same sex. Homophobia and the discrimination it produces permeate our society. “Fag jokes” are not uncommon; stereotypes abound, for example, of the limp-wristed male, or of the male-identified lesbian, or that all gays are after children or lurking in parks to prey upon unsuspecting people. These are but a few examples in a long list of untrue stereotypes.

When professionals are homophobic, their attitude may be hostile towards gay people, or they may focus too much on their clients’ sexuality, and thus overlook the presenting problem. Some even attempt to “cure” or “treat” the person’s homosexuality. At the other extreme, professionals often deny or avoid the sexuality of their elderly clients altogether, and the consideration that their client may be gay or lesbian is beyond the workers’ comprehension or ideology.
